RO in Parliament

On Tuesday 14 October 2014, Realising Opportunities hosted an event in the House of Commons, sponsored by Chi Onwurah MP for Newcastle Central, to celebrate the work of the unique collaborative Partnership in widening participation and social mobility and the success of our students!

The event was attended by representatives from Partner universities, students currently involved in RO, RO alumni, ementors, representatives from BIS, OFFA, HEFCE, UCAS and Universities UK and cross-party MPs.

We were pleased to welcome Eric Ollerenshaw MP who spoke about the importance of collaboration and the role of higher education in improving social mobility, while Chi Onwurah highlighted the benefits social mobility work brings to the UK economy and society.

Students outlined how Realising Opportunities had supported them during sixth form via an RO video launched that evening. You can watch this video here.

Furthermore, the event highlighted the publishing of the report Realising Opportunities, Working Together Supporting Talent which showed that increasing numbers of applications made by RO students are receiving offers and more students are looking to move away from home.

The report has also received coverage in the Times Higher Education.

To accompany the event, Robert Milthorpe a student who took part in Realising Opportunities’ very first cohort in 2010 has written a blog about his experiences of RO.
