Virtual NSC: Choosing a My Research session

It’s Chloe, your Realising Opportunities Ambassador – you may have seen some of the emails I have been sending you over the last few months.

Following some queries, I received before the last National Student Conference (NSC), I have decided to make this blog post to help you decide which ‘My Research Subject’ is best for you.

I know at first glance you may feel that the options aren’t directly related to the subject choice you have in mind for university, but by following the table below you will see which subjects each subject stream relates to.

Q – Which My Research session should I attend?

A – That’s easy – which ever one you like. Pick the session you’re most interested in. You only need to attend one session – but you can attend two (one from each timeslot) if you’d like.

Q – Which session is most relevant to me?

A – We’d recommend choosing the session based on the sort of subject you hope to study when you get to university. Because it’s possible to study so many different subjects at university, the sessions are based on four broad subject streams:

1a. Life and Health Sciences

1b. Creative Arts and Humanities

2a. Engineering and Physical Sciences

2b. Social Sciences

You can use the table below to help you see which session might be right for you:

My Research subject streams

Life and Health Sciences* Creative Arts and Humanities* Engineering and Physical Sciences* Social Sciences*
Biomedical Sciences Art All Engineering subjects Business
Food and Nutrition  Classics Astronomy Criminology

* These lists are not exhaustive but a representation of the type of subjects/degrees under each stream to help you pick a session

Don’t worry though – whichever session you attend will benefit you in learning about the types of research that take place at research intensive universities. If you are still feeling unsure on which session to attend, please feel free to give me an email to discuss the best option for you.

The NSC is a really great opportunity, and I am looking forward to talking to some of you on the day at the help desk.

See you on 11 March!
